- Ruby red in colour. Rich, luscious bouquet offering layers of fresh and lively spice. A delicious entrance of sweet ripe fruit with notes of cherries and red currant, layers of aromatic spice with a hint of orange peel leading to a savoury core with subtle tannins. A medium bodied wine with velvety texture, creating a tasting impression.
- Mild spring leading to ideal conditions for fruit-set in December. Summer was very hot and dry with some rain only towards the very end of autumn. Hand-picked and careful selection of grapes. 100% de-stemmed, cold-maceration and fermentation in stainless steel vats and left on "skins" for 3 weeks. Aged in used French oak barriques for 18 months.
- Skin contact plays a major role in this Wairarapa pinot noir. Three weeks is nothing to ignore, not just in the case of floral liqueur aromatics but even more so in what texture it brings. That and the slow micro-oxidation of 18 months spent in used French barriques. This is pinot noir that was not rushed in any way and it shows. The wine is pure and highly likeable. It carries a sweetness that belies its fussy nature. Drink 2016-2020. Tasted August 2016. - 92 points - Michael Godel, Wine Align This is an elegant, spicy-savoury and structured pinot from a fine producer in New Zealand's North Island - Wairarapa, perfumed and floral, dark and swarthy in the best way. Tannins are refined and sophisticated, acids perfectly in balance, and the length exceptional. Really fine stuff, and fine value in the rarefied realm of pinot noir. Drink or hold into the early '20s. Tasted August 2016. - 92 points - John Szabo, Wine Align This is a lovely pinot that is so typical of Martinborough in a good year. Expect aromas of cherry and plum fruit with floral, spicy and herbal complexity. It is midweight and so finely balanced with the velvety smooth fruit driven by vibrant acidity on to the long lingering finish. Excellent length. Elegant and classy. It is a little hot on the finish otherwise would have scored higher. Great buy. Best 2016 to 2021. Tasted August 2016. - 91 points - Steve Thurlow, Wine Align Schubert is one of the pioneering pinot noir estates of the Martinborough region. This is a delicious, warmer clime, youthful pinot with lovely ripe blueberry/cherry fruit, violets, some foresty and gently spicy complexity. It's medium weight, almost silky smooth with very fine tannin. Alcohol is warm but in check and the fruit comes through to excellent length. Best now to 2020.
